BEAT STRESS

Research from UCLA shows us that we actually have a lot of control over our stress. You can elicit stress or relaxation by the thoughts and behaviors you choose. This is because the autonomic nervous system has two parts to it: the sympathetic nervous system, (the stress response) and the parasympathetic nervous system, (the relaxation response.) A good way to shut off the stress response and turn on the relaxation response is to practice the mindfulness technique of doing one thing at a time. Multi-tasking, while sometimes good and/or necessary, does not promote self-care and relaxation. Try focusing on each activity you are doing, being in the moment, enjoying the process, without thinking about what you’re going to do next, or how you’re behind schedule.

•Today, try just making the bed, or just brushing your teeth, or just eating. Practicing doing things in a calm manner will lead you to your goal of making time for self-care and total wellness. Make sure you are doing at least one thing daily, such as stretching, breathing, or singing that relaxes your body. You’ll notice a difference as you become calmer and more focused.

Action Step
What is one daily activity I can do mindfully (one thing at a time)? Example: eat, brush my teeth?
